【授業のねらい】
This course aims to introduce aspects of the culture, history, geography, traditions and literature of the British Isles to give a background and context to English language study, and to have students become more aware of cultural differences in the wider world and among non-Japanese persons.
【具体的な到達目標】
Students are introduced to some significant areas, towns, and sites in Britain and cultural or historical points connected with them. They also practice dialogues about cultural aspects for practical communication. Each week, students prepare a mini-talk related to a topic introduced during the classroom activity. Supplementary material provides further insight into places and topics introduced

1. Arriving in Britain and the UK, an overview.
2. Visiting London; some historical places and people.
3. London and tourist sights; transportation.
4. Entertainment and drama in Britain.
5. Central England; the Cotswold area; staying at a B&B; English meals.
6. The North of England; Manchester; sports in Britain.
7. Yorkshire; the history of York; Haworth and the Brontes; British dishes.
8. The Lake District; poets and Beatrix potter; the National Trust.
9. The Border Country; England and Scotland; Roman influence.
10. Edinburgh, history and culture; visiting a pub.
11. The Highlands; Loch Ness; New Year customs.
12. The Islands of Scotland; making whisky.
13. The Orkney Islands; World Heritage Sites.
14. Northern Ireland; holidays in the UK.
15. Wales; Welsh history and culture.
